Tour Highlights
Swim at the heart of one of the Mediterranean’s largest marine reserves, enjoying offshore adventures where dolphins and eagle rays breach the surface. You may even see a rare Mediterranean monk seal if we’re lucky!
Escape the crowds on a hidden gem in the Egadi archipelago, experiencing authentic Italian island culture and sampling its world-famous cuisine. One evening, take part in a Sicilian cooking experience, preparing and sharing a traditional dinner accompanied by local wine.
Uncover the island’s many secrets - seek out secluded coves, sea caves and cliff-edged coastal swims in clear waters where turtles are often spotted among the rocks.
Take a journey through history on sea and land. Hike stunning landscapes and learn more from our experienced guides about Marettimo’s unique geology, wildlife and breathtaking landscapes.
The wild island of Marettimo sits within one of the largest marine reserves in the Mediterranean Sea, off the western coast of volcanic Sicily. Our swims will take us into the Canal of Sicily, near the islands of Favignana and Levanzo, and deep into the heart of the Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area. We are privileged to be able to swim limited access areas of the reserve accessible only to authorised tour operators.
In these protected waters, we will discover endless fields of seagrass, grazed by shoaling small fish. We may encounter sea turtles nearer the rocky beaches, as well as dolphins, eagles rays and wreckfish on our offshore adventures. If we’re especially lucky, a Mediterranean monk seal could make an appearance too – they have been sighted before around the coastal caves. Overhead, the skies are patrolled by eagles and peregrine falcons. Marettimo also supports a rare colony of Mediterranean storm petrels, nesting in niches among wave-beaten crags and rock formations, known for their fossil-bearing outcrops.

On this SwimHike we will explore a living open-air museum where every trail uncovers a story and every steps reveals new wonders. From soaring mountains to sculptured limestone coasts, we will seek out many of the best panoramic views Marettimo has to offer. You may be surprised by the natural wealth of this small and remote island, shaped by ancient limestone and dolomite formations many millions of years in the making.
We are led by experienced hiking guides, seizing opportunities to learn about local history, ancient traditions and the unique way of life at the farthest reaches of the Egadi archipelago. Delightfully free of tourist crowds, Marettimo is a relatively undiscovered secret, with remarkable wildlife to meet on the inland trails, like rabbits, lizards, fallow deer and wild boar. Every hike is different, making each wildlife encounter a memorable experience. Our guides will also help you to identify plants and aromatic herbs, explaining their ecological importance as we roam among the fragrant Mediterranean maquis.
