Which Greek Island Trip for Me?

By Olivia Weatherill , 11 April, 2018

SwimTrek offers stunning island getaways to some of the most exquisite parts of Greece. Our tours aim to combine classic sought after destinations but with the intention of opening our guest’s eyes to a new side to the location, or an introduction to a swim with a purpose. But apart from the immediate attractions of the temperate waters and remote beaches, how else should you distinguish between our Greek Island offerings, and just how do you go about picking the best one for you? This guide aims to differentiate between the key attractions of each location, why it is worth swimming there and the types of swimming you can expect. For details on daily swim distance and average weather predictions, please check our trip notes where we have more estimations for each month that we visit.

Our Crete Discovery trip offers a relaxing, remote getaway as the town of Loutro, our home for the week, is set at the base of steep mountains on the coast and is only accessible by boat! This trip is all about exploring the southern coast of Crete, and we will cover areas all the way up to the striking base of the Samaria Gorge and explore the bays of Hora Sfakion and Loutro itself. The sleepy, coastal village is made up of many beautiful, white buildings that are built up into the mountains, and provide a fantastic backdrop to watch the incredible sunrises and sunsets from. This trip is all coastal swims, so worth bearing in mind if you are looking to vary your week with island crossings. vsdv.jpg

The Greek Cyclades trip is the original SwimTrek Classic, the first trip we ever ran back in 2003. The Cyclades is quite different to the majority of our trips, as we are based on two different islands and hotels over the week’s trip, and in true SwimTrek Style, we swim the majority of the distance between them! This is a great trip for a guest who likes the idea of a classic island hopping week in Greece, and enjoys a mix of coastals and crossings. We are also based on a stunning yacht for the week, and with a smaller maximum capacity of 11, there is a great intimate feel to these trips. IMG_2429.JPG

Our Milos Explorer has become one of our most popular trips in recent years. With stunning views that rival the likes of Santorini and Mykonos, we definitely recommend visiting Milos before the rest of the world catches on! Milos is an incredibly beautiful island with brilliant turquoise waters and sheer white, contrasting cliffs. The underwater vistas and natural archways prove an exciting swim course, the route being mostly made up of coastals but with a few island circumnavigations and crossings for good measure. Our Milos hotel also provides us with a large number of single supplement rooms, which is a nice assurance to bear in mind as our single supplement rooms always get booked up quickly! IMG_2212.jpg

The Greek Sporades trip offers a chance to see some of the lesser explored islands in the north west of the Aegean Sea. We cover 5 large islands in the Sporades region, and swim in some of the waters that make up the National Marine Park of Alonissos Northern Sporades. Another great trip for exploring the caves of the coastlines and enjoying the remoteness of these islands. There is a mix of coastals and crossings on this trip, as well as the chance to see the endangered local Mediterranean Monk Seal.

Finally, our Ionian Explorer is our newest Greek trip, but has already built itself as a firm favourite with our guides who have worked it. Our week is divided between swimming along the coast of the Greek mainland around Sivota, and then exploring the nearby islands with circumnavigations. This trip offers a great variety of swims and plenty of caves to explore! There is also the opportunity swim through the many tunnels and arches around the coastline, and our hotel provides great views over the charming village.
