Patmos, Greece: Location Spotlight

By Jack Hudson , 14 July, 2025

A hidden jewel, circled by the Aegean and treasured for its remote natural beauty…

The little Greek island of Patmos belongs to the Dodecanese grouping in the southeastern Aegean, which includes around 150 smaller islets. Many of these chains are fringed by sunbaked beaches and washed by clear waters that shimmer with sun glitter.

The 15 larger islands are known for their historical marvels, including churches from the Byzantine era and medieval monuments and castles strewn in ruins along the rocky coasts. The biggest of all the Dodecanese is Rhodes – well-known for its Colossus, recognised as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

“[Patmos] escapes the crowds and is spoilt for uninhabited islands and undisturbed bays...”

Patmos, on the other hand, keeps its charms and secrets closer to its chest. It is a small and secluded refuge from the summer tourist bustle. In fact, the population is estimated to be a measly 3,000, with residents scattered mostly along the 63-kilometre coastline. This Greek hideaway escapes the crowds, spoilt for uninhabited islands and undisturbed bays where marine life thrives. It is a better kept secret than many of its neighbours, making it an ideal destination for our 2025 selection of new SwimTrek swimming holidays.

Overview

We compared Patmos to similar island getaways in our 'Find Your Perfect: Greek Island' blog a few weeks ago. The more we delved into the island's attractions the clearer it became why Patmos is so often described as a 'hidden gem' among the other Dodecanese islands.

The spiritual significance of Patmos is important to note - they call it the 'sacred isle' for good reason. This is where you'll find the UNESCO-listed Monastery of Saint John, which houses ancient relics and manuscripts, as well as artefacts of Byzantine origin. Of course, the Cave of the Apocalypse is often mentioned in guidebooks too - where Saint John was said to have seen vision that inspired him to write the 'Book of Revelation'.

The island's natural beauty is defined by rolling hills, dotted with whitewashed villages, and coastlines indented with coves and sleepy harbours. Skala is the main port and the closest thing the island has to a commercial hub, criss-crossed by narrow alleys leading to squares wafted by an aroma of salty seafood. Here you'll find many cafes, restaurants, and shops selling souvenirs.

“ You'll walk in the footsteps of Ancient Greeks, Romans and medieval knights who once explored the island...”

Of course, there are plenty of adventures to be enjoyed on and around Patmos as well. The nearby islands of Arki, Lipsi, and Marathi invite boat-trippers out onto the slow rollers of the warm Aegean. Once you explore the local seas you find the kind of playground swimmers thrive in. Grikos Bay is exceptionally peaceful and has a backdrop of impressive rock formations as well.

You're sure to settle in quicky here at the heart of the Dodecanese, learning more about the local history and mythology. You'll walk in the footsteps of Ancient Greeks, Romans and medieval knights who once explored the island. Millenia ago, the nearby waters were also sailed by Odysseus and Alexander 'The Great'.

This is truly an island enriched by a tradition of storytelling and a legacy of religious discovery.

Where We Stay

Welcome To The Patmos Eye Hotel

One of the highlights of this trip is our incredible base at the sea-facing Patmos Eye Hotel. This hilltop hotel blends traditional architecture with modern comforts, perched above far-reaching coastal waters, just outside the main town. You will quickly fall in love with the views and the heartfelt Aegean hospitality.

All rooms and suites were carefully designed to make the most of the sea views, inspired by the island itself and the eclectic Patmian aesthetic, with flourishes from a local community of artisans. Don't forget to visit the Cave Spa for post-swim relaxation during your stay. Find out more about this wellness retreat and the Turkish hammam below.

Things To Do

  • At your hotel, you can visit the Patmos Eye Cave Spa, which specialises in innovative therapies and products. The spa is styled around the mystic atmosphere of the Cave of the Apocalypse. Signature treatments mix Greek healing rituals with modern wellness science for a transformative experience.

  • Cultural highlights include the Patmos International Film Festival in July, which is a chance to catch open-air screenings in a relaxed island setting. There are also religious celebrations for Easter and the Feast of Saint John on September 26th. The festivities are always atmospheric as candlelit processions walk the cobbled streets.

  • There are many more beaches to discover before or after your trip with us, including the remote Psili Ammos (reachable only by boat or hike) and sandy Agriolivadi with its lively beach bars and water sports.

  • Take to the hiking trails and follow scenic routes to other villages, like Skala, or Chora. On the way, you will pass through hills and olive groves, with many panoramic lookouts to stop and whip out your camera.

  • Additional boat tours sail to nearby Arki, Lipsi, or Marathi for far-flung beaches and more opportunities to recline into island life. Otherwise, you can get your adrenaline going by hitting the water to explore sea caves, snorkelling spots, and shaded coves.

Must-Try Local Dishes And Drinks

Patmos is often celebrated for its culinary scene, serving delicious Patmian cheese and fresh seafood dishes, like the lobster spaghetti. Drift down the cobblestones and wander into local cafes and tavernas - you will not be disappointed!

  • Octopus is a delicacy in Patmos, featured on most menus and often spotted drying on garden lines. Octopus braised in wine is a Greek specialty served on the island - called 'Octopus Krassato'.

  • You can't visit Patmos without chowing down on a cheese pie - hand-shaped, flavoured with herbs and packed with soft cheese. For those of you with sweet teeth, the signature nut-filled pastry is 'pougkakia', filled with almonds, walnuts, cinnamon, and honey.

  • The Greek fisherman's soup is a must-try with freshly caught fish, olive oil, lemon, and local vegetables.

  • Patmian wine may not get the kudos reserved for Santorini wine, but small-batch red and white wines, produced on the island, are not to be sniffed at.

  • There's fun to be had when the 'Ouzo' flows. This is a Greek aperitif, which is anise-flavoured, enjoyed with small mouthfuls of meze, within earshot of the sea.

  • If you want something non-alcoholic, the Greek coffee is brewed strong and thick in a 'briki' before being served in small cups. You can try it 'sketos' (no sugar), 'metrios' (medium), or 'glykos' (sweet).
