Tour Highlights
Swim in the warm, protected waters of Sultan Iskandar Marine Park, rich with tropical marine life.
Island-hop through the Sibu archipelago, exploring jungle-backed coastlines and secluded, white-sand beaches.
Stay in traditional Malay atap cabins at the family-run Sea Gypsy Village Resort, tucked into tropical gardens on a private beach.
Venture off the beaten path and discover laid-back island life. Switch off, slow down and enjoy every second of this tropical getaway.
Get to know Pulau Sibu beyond the water, with genuine local hospitality, sunset adventures, and a beach barbecue and bonfire to complete the week.
Tucked just off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, Pulau Sibu is the kind of place that still feels like a hidden gem. Together with its neighbouring islands, it sits within the protected Sultan Iskandar Marine Park – a wonderfully quiet corner of Malaysia, with warm tropical seas, colourful coral reefs and plenty of coastline to explore.
Swimming here is a special experience. We’ll spend our days exploring Sibu and the surrounding islands, mixing coastal swims with island crossings and plenty of time over the reefs. These relatively shallow waters are full of life, from colourful reef fish to impressive Bumphead Parrotfish. Our local boat crew know the coastline inside out and can take us to some of their favourite hidden swimming spots. Even back at Sea Gypsy Village Resort, the house reef is only a few steps from the beach.
Sea Gypsy Village Resort is our home for the week and very much part of the Sibu experience. Set between the jungle and a 400-metre sweep of white sand, this family-run resort is a genuine back-to-nature experience, working in harmony with its natural surroundings and embracing a low-impact approach to tourism. The Wills family have called Sibu home for decades, and their love for the island, their team and the local community runs through Sea Gypsy – when you stay here, you feel like part of the family too. Your traditional atap cabin is simple and full of character; there are no televisions or air conditioning, just ceiling fans, unheated showers and the cooling sea breeze drifting through the windows.
Experience everything the island has to offer with a visit to Sibu’s local village and lunch at its family-run restaurant, an optional sunset boat excursion to a secluded island, and a beach barbecue and bonfire by the sea to round the week off.
Who is this trip for?
This trip is ideal for adventurous swimmers looking to get off the tourist trail, without the usual hassle of getting there. With return group transfers from Singapore Changi Airport included, we take care of the journey so you can simply enjoy discovering this lesser-known corner of Malaysia.
If you value authentic experiences, spectacular swimming and basic, characterful accommodation over luxury resorts, this trip is for you.
The average swim distance is around 2.5–3km. The average daily swim distance is around 5km across two swims. Expect plenty of variety, from coastal swims to small island crossings of up to 500m.
We have given this trip a ‘Moderate’ grading. Most swimmers comfortable in the open water will be able to take part and enjoy one of these trips.
It’s also a great trip to share with a non-swimmer. While you’re out swimming, they can make the most of Sea Gypsy’s PADI-affiliated dive centre, snorkelling, kayaking and island activities – or simply relax and enjoy beach-life!
For new SwimTrekkers, it’s a welcoming introduction to our Classic trips, while returning swimmers will love discovering somewhere that still feels wonderfully off the beaten path.
Are you a Pioneer?
We are excited to share our entirely new Sibu Island Explorer - Malaysia trip for an action-packed 2027 of adventures. Our first departures will be Pioneer Departures.
