Based in the scenic seaside town of Colonia de Sant Jordi, you'll have easy access to Mallorca's warm clear waters, sheltered bays to practice your open water swimming, and a world-class 50-meter open air training pool at the BEST Swim Centre.

Who is this camp for?

This trip is suitable for swimmers of various levels, from those just starting their open water journey to those looking to build on existing experience and develop their confidence. Or if you fall somewhere in between, there will be tailored sessions for you on this trip.

It is ideal for swimmers who are confident in the pool - able to swim at least 500m continuously - and are either new to open water or looking to enhance their open water experience. Whether you're transitioning from the pool and want to build confidence in the sea, or you’ve dipped into open water and are now ready to take your skills to the next level, this trip offers a supportive, structured environment to grow.

You’ll receive expert coaching focused on technique, open water skills, and endurance, all delivered at a pace that accommodates a range of experience levels. Our approach is flexible and tailored, helping you develop the confidence and capability for longer open water swims.

We have given this trip a ‘Beginner’ grading designed for people new to open water swimming.

The average swim distance in any one session is up to 1.5km depending on your level. The average total daily swim distance will vary depending on your level.

During the coached swimming sessions we will aim to cover elements of the following, tailored to your level:

Unit Content
Unit 1 Breathing
Unit 2 Body Position and Alignment
Unit 3 Catch and Propulsion
Unit 4 Sighting

Units 1-3 will be covered in the pool sessions, and we will touch on unit 4 in the open water swims, but these will also give you a chance to put into practice what you have learnt in the pool sessions.

In the seminars we will cover the following:

Seminar Content
Seminar 1 Open Water Personal Safety
Seminar 2 Understanding the open water environment
Seminar 3 Preparing for an open water swim

If you'd like to spend more time in the water, develop your technique further, work on open water skills or build your endurance, you may like to consider our 6-day Introduction to Open Water - Mallorca or Open Water Development - Mallorca coaching camps, which also run out of Colonia de Sant Jordi, or our Introduction to Open Water - Cyprus course.

How this coaching camp works

This camp is designed to be a safe and structured way to build open water swimming skills and confidence.

You'll be part of a group of swimmers from all over the world, with various open water experience and abilities. It's an excellent opportunity to meet new people on the same swimming journey as you.

For the pool sessions, you'll be in a smaller group of around 15 swimmers of a similar level of swimming experience as you, and for the open water swims you will be in larger groups of around 30 swimmers. The seminars will involve all the camp participants.

Before the camp starts, you'll be asked about your open water experience and confidence, and on the first day you'll also take part in a short open water swim. This will help the coaches prepare a timetable of sessions that will best suit you, which you will receive on the first evening.

This timetable will ensure you have the opportunity to benefit from all the camp has to offer. However, if you'd like to adjust the schedule or want to share the experience with someone who's joined the camp with you, please speak to the coaches.

All these sessions are optional, but we of course recommend attending every session on your timetable to get the most out of the camp!

Sample Itinerary

Please note that the below daily itineraries are an example of the coaching sessions, seminars and swims that may take place during your trip, however, actual swim locations and distances will vary according to local weather and sea conditions. Your SwimTrek coaches and local boat pilot will determine the most suitable swim locations each day and will communicate the plan with all guests as soon as possible.

Trip Schedule

Start Point: Your accommodation in Colonia de Sant Jordi, Mallorca

Start Time: 16:00 on Day 1

Finish Point: Colonia de Sant Jordi, Mallorca

Finish Time: 12:00 on Day 4

Day 1

We meet at the Hotel Romántica for a welcome meeting and where we detail the plan for the week ahead.

Following this, we head off for a short acclimatisation swim in two groups, where you and the coaches will have an opportunity for an initial assessment of your open water swimming level.

There will also be an opportunity for an open swim at the BEST Centre pool. This will not be a coached session.

The first seminar will be held after the swims, and will cover key topics around safety when swimming in the open water. This will also be the opportunity for the coaches to give you your recommended timetable for the camp.

After the seminar, you'll return to your hotel for dinner.

Day 2

After breakfast, you'll take part in a morning pool session or open water swim, depending on your specific timetable.

Then there will be a break for lunch together at Hotel Romántica, after which there will be another seminar, focussing on understanding swimming conditions and choosing safe swim spots.

When the seminar is finished, there will be a second swimming session (either in the pool or open water, depending on your timetable).

The whole group will then get together for a BBQ dinner afterwards. A great opportunity to share the experience so far and get to know everyone better!

Day 3

Day 3 will be similar to Day 2.

After breakfast, you'll take part in a morning pool session or open water swim, depending on your specific timetable.

After lunch, you'll join the rest of the group for the last seminar of the camp, focussed on preparing for a swim event or race.

Following the seminar, there will be another swimming session (either in the pool or open water, depending on your timetable), with dinner at your hotel afterwards.

Day 4

It's an early start today, with your final swimming session held before breakfast. After the swim, you'll head back to your hotel for a well-earned breakfast to fuel up, and then we'll have one more chance for a farewell dip in the sea as a group before we say our goodbyes!

Accommodation

Hotel Romántica or Cabo Blanco

There is a choice between two accommodations on this trip, Hotel Romántica or Cabo Blanco, in the athletic hub of Colonia Sant Jordi.

Location Summary

Colonia Sant Jordi

The village of Colonia Sant Jordi is our home for the duration of the coaching camp. Colonia Sant Jordi is a popular beach resort town on Mallorca’s south-west coast and offers the chance to explore a part of the world that offers plenty of sporting activities, such as swimming, walking, and cycling – it is also on the rugged doorstep of the Es Trenc-Salobrar National Park. So, you are only a short distance away from one of Mallorca's best-known natural attractions - the dune-fringed beach of Es Trenc.

Swimming Conditions and Locations

Mallorca is an excellent location for making the transition from pool to open water, and for building confidence in sea swimming. It has reliably warm, sunny and fair weather; warm, clear sea waters; lots of sheltered bays, beaches and coves; and proximity to a high-quality 50 open water pool to work on technique.

During this camp, you will have a mix of pool and open water swimming sessions.

The pool sessions will be held in the BEST Centre's 50m open air swimming pool. This is a heated pool, kept above 25°C throughout the year.

The open water swimming sessions will be held at various bays, beaches and coves along the nearby coastline, including Estanys and Trenc beaches. The exact locations of the swims will depend on the coaches' recommendation on what will suit your group best, as well as the weather and water conditions on the day.

For an indication of potential swimming locations, please see our map.

During the open water swims, you'll be escorted at all times by qualified swim guides and coaches on rigid inflatable boats (RIBs) or kayaks. While we encourage you to complete all the swims, to get the most from the camp, you can at any point during the swims signal to the swim guides to pick you up.

Swimming in the open water is a fantastic experience, however you should be aware that certain marine life such as jellyfish, plankton, sea lice, sea urchins and coral could be present during the swims and may cause some discomfort. In all cases we will work on reducing your contact with these creatures and that any interactions are managed safely. If you suffer from anaphylaxis, please consult the office prior to booking.

Trip Grading

We have given this trip a ‘Beginner’ grading designed for people new to open water swimming.

Swimming Distances

Swimming distances in the sea will vary over the course of the camp, depending on the conditions and the ability of your group. As a guide, we expect to cover no more than 1.5km per swim.

These distances may seem intimidating for some newcomers to open water swimming, but as you develop your technique and confidence, and you spend more time in the open water, you'll find that this can start to feel like too little!

And, at any point you are welcome to take a break from pool sessions or jump onto the boat or to the shore during sea swims, if required.

Walking Distances and Conditions

As this is a swim coaching camp, there is a limited amount of walking, however we do walk to and from the pool and another beach location throughout the week. Walks are approximately 15-20 minutes long.

Temperatures

Month Water Temp* Air Temp*
May 17-20°C / 62-68°F 20-22°C / 68-72°F

*Please note that these temperatures are indicative and should be used as a guide only.

Weather Caveat

For safety reasons, we rely on decent weather conditions when carrying out our swims. As a consequence, open water swimming holidays require a certain degree of on-trip flexibility which can result in changes to the planned itinerary. These changes often add a touch of uniqueness to your trip and will be communicated to you by your SwimTrek guides as quickly as possible.

Trip Information

Group size

This trip has a maximum capacity of 60 swimmers. Your seminars and socials will take place with the full group, while coached pool sessions will be split into smaller groups of maximum 15, with a maximum coach:swimmer ratio of 1:8.

On open water swims, the group will be split into groups, based on speed, with each group being accompanied by their own safety vessel/escort.

Boat Support

You will be escorted during your open water swims by two support boats and/or kayaks to be piloted by your SwimTrek coaches and guides. Please note that this boat support is subject to change without notice and cannot be guaranteed.

Extra Activities

A local massage therapist can be booked locally at the Best Centre’s counter. This is not part of the SwimTrek arrangements but can be arranged at the centre or potentially at your hotel. Group and private yoga classes are also available.

Equipment Checklist

For your basic, essential packing list, please visit our Packing List page on the website. For additional, location specific items, please see the information below.

SwimTrek will provide water and electrolytes at every location and refill your bottles.

A wetsuit is not required for this camp, but we strongly recommend packing one. A wetsuit will likely be too warm for the coaching sessions in the heated pool, but will be suitable for sea swims.

Coaching Sessions

Our experienced coaches will cover a range of coaching sessions including swim technique and open water skills to suit your experience and confidence level.

Sessions will take place in a purpose built 50m swimming pool at the BEST Swim Centre – the perfect venue for a structured training program. The small bays and dramatic coastline of Mallorca are an ideal base for our open water swim sessions as well.

Accommodation

You can choose from two options for accommodation for the week - Hotel Romántica or Hotel Cabo Blanco, located next to each other. They both offer modern seafront accommodation, situated within a short walking distance of Mallorca's most stunning beach 'Es Trenc', and also within easy reach of the world-class facilities at the BEST Swim Centre, which we will be using throughout the camp.

Find out more about these hotels and the room options available.

Pre/Post Trip Accommodation and Trip Extension Options

If you would like to extend your stay in Mallorca and need to book additional accommodation nights before or after the camp, please book these directly via the Hotel Romántica or Cabo Blanco websites.

Food and Drink

All breakfasts and dinners are included in the camp price. On day 2 lunch is provided for all swimmers. Please note that all other lunches are at your own expense. Breakfast at Hotel Romántica will be a buffet style, whilst breakfasts at Cabo Blanco will be à la carte.

For more information, please visit our food and drink page on the website.

Getting There

The easiest way to reach the start of the coaching camp is to fly into Palma de Mallorca International Airport and then catch either a taxi or airport shuttle service to your accommodation at Hotel Romántica.

As SwimTrekkers come from all over the world, and join our swimming holidays in numerous destinations, we don't currently offer flights as part of our SwimTrek packages. We do however want to do as much as we can to ensure that our guests get the best deals when travelling to one of our trips so check out SwimTrek's tips to help you get the best deals for your flights page on the website.

Travel Advice

For more information on any of the following sections please visit the Travel Advice page of our website.

Money, Extra Expenses and Tipping

You should bring extra money with you to cover items such as meals not already included in your package, drinks, entertainment, souvenirs, etc.

In some countries, tipping (gratuities) is not part of the culture - in others it has become an expected norm. We believe that tipping is done entirely at your own discretion. If you have been provided with excellent service it may be something you wish to do. Your SwimTrek Guides can advise on local norms for service providers like boat crew, waiters or taxis. Nothing is expected for your SwimTrek Guides but many groups like to present something to the Guides at the end of the trip. The local currency in Spain is the Euro (€). Please note a tourist tax will need to be paid on location, currently €2.20 per person per night.

Responsible Travel

SwimTrek is conscious of the importance of protecting the world’s natural wonders. We are acutely aware of our responsibility to not only take care of the natural environments which we are lucky enough to explore, but also to educate our guests about the importance of conservation efforts and responsible tourism. It’s for this reason that we have worked so closely with our partners to ensure that our trips are conducted in the most responsible and sustainable way possible, working tirelessly to minimise the impact of our presence on local marine life and the natural habitat.

For more information, please visit our Responsible Travel page on the website.

Passports and Visas

Mallorca is part of Spain, which is part of the European Union. Non-residents of Spain require a full passport to enter the country, which should be valid for six months beyond the expected length of stay. Citizens of all EU member states, the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, do not require a visa to enter Spain. Please note that visa regulations are subject to change and it is important that you check your own visa requirements prior to travel.

Travel Insurance

We consider comprehensive travel insurance to be essential, and we strongly recommend that you purchase insurance which includes, but is not limited to, cover for illness, accident, emergency repatriation, ambulance, air ambulance, helicopter rescue services, cancellation, lost luggage and delays. Your travel insurance should also cover you for open water swimming and any other activity listed in your trip itinerary (including races and competitions, where applicable). Please read your policy details carefully and remember to take them with you on your trip for your own reference.

For further information, please visit our Travel Insurance page on the website.

Here at SwimTrek, we pride ourselves on our focus on safety and the well-being of all our guests. As we operate in some beautiful and remote locations medical facilities are not always easily accessible. SwimTrek Guides, and many staff working for our local partners, are first aid trained. However, we ask that you read our Travel Health page to ensure that you are informed about general Travel and Swim Health precautions.
