Tour Highlights

  • This unique SwimTrek package in association with RuckRaft.

  • Swim through the marvellous Kingsgate Bay Sea Arch.

  • Explore from the water the chalk stone cliffs of the Viking Trail.

The Viking Coastal Trail is a coastline like no other in the U.K, bragging not only dramatic coastal sceneries but with historic towns, bloodthirsty Viking history and of course it was one of Charles Dickens’ favourite walks. The cliffs and beaches are what characterise the Viking coastal trail, however the footpath also passes through the towns of Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate, finally reaching Pegwell Bay, where it is reported that Vikings first landed in Kent.

Margate has a bevvy of galleries, pubs, restaurants on the seafront and the train station home is at the end of the beach. We’d suggest staying the night in Margate and staying the night - it’s a good day, evening out and we can help you with the top spots to go. Arrive at Broadstairs one hour before high tide and meet at Viking Bay.

This unique SwimTrek package in association with RuckRaft will include several swims that will deliver dramatic, sweeping views across the English Channel contrasted with sandy beach hikes surrounded by stunning chalk cliff rock formations.

The swims are tidally assisted, with a total distance of 3.5km swimming and a total distance of hiking of 3km. Swim times can be anything from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on the tide. This trip is also family friendly and can cater for children as young as 12 years old.

This trip is offered as a tailor-made experience, so the date of travel and itinerary can be adjusted to suit your interests and availability. Please contact the team on info@swimtrek.com with the number of swimmers interested and a couple of dates in mind and we can explore what's possible.

Please note that the below daily itinerary is an example of the swim that may take place, however, actual swim and distance will vary according to local weather and sea conditions. Your SwimTrek guides and local boat pilot will determine the most suitable swim and will communicate the plan with all guests as soon as possible.

The start time of the trip is dependent on the tide times. We aim to meet at Viking Bay near Broadstairs one hour before high tide. We always aim to swim with the tide. Initially we will hold a pre-swim briefing where we will discuss the plan for the swim and safety points. We depart Viking Bay and head towards Joss Bay.

One of the swim guides will be in the water with a RuckRaft and the other guide will be on a Rescue board. They will be able to carry a limited amount of clothing/towels with them. On entering the water, we head out around 200m from the coast and keep this proximity to the coastline line throughout the swim.

After a chance to relax and rest, the 2nd swim is from Joss Bay to Botany Bay underneath the limestone cliffs that makes this coast so famous. On completing the swim, the remaining distance to Margate is covered by foot over Limestone cliffs.

Margate has a bevvy of galleries, pubs, restaurants on the seafront and the train station home is at the end of the beach. We’d suggest staying the night in Margate and staying the night - it’s a good day, evening out and we can help you with the top spots to go.
