  • SwimTreker swims the English Channel
  •   On the 9th August Frank Chalmers became the first SwimTreker to go from doing a SwimTrek trip to successfully completing a solo crossing of the Everest of open water swimming; The English Channel. In the following article, Frank explains what got him there and how he felt during the swim.

Since Frank's swim, another SwimTreker Sarah Hamer has also completed it. Congratulations to both of them! Mention should also be made of Sally Goble and Chis Jarvis, who were both unsuccessfull this time. Sally stayed in the water for an astounding 21 hours before calling it a day.

  • Coaching Corner
  •   In this new series we will discuss different areas of technique which may help you with your swimming stroke.

In the following section we look at body roll, an important part of the swimming stroke, all too often forgotten by swimmers.

  • Where do you swim?
  •   Kate Rew, a SwimTreker from Greece, River Thames and the Lake District is writing a guidebook to the UK's best open water swimming spots and would love suggestions from you about your favourite locations. She's interested in where the swims are, how to do them and what you love about them

Don't forget that a swim which is well known to you - even if it's just one tiny natural pool on a local river - may seem magical to another open water swimmer who wouldn't have the courage to get into the water without knowing other people go there. If you would like to help please send nominations of natural pools, lake swims, river swims, favourite bits of coastline and reservoirs (both dips and longer swims) to her at wildswims@yahoo.co.uk

  • Book Review: Liquid Assets
  •   Until recent years a network of lidos across Britain created an artificial landscape of urban beaches. The 1920's and 30's marked a golden era of outdoor swimming, with more than 300 open-air pools nationwide and 68 in London alone. In Liquid Assets, author Janet Smith celebrates those heady days, taking a nostalgic look at lidos and illustrating their decline - there are now fewer than 100 left.

The book is full of stunning images and a comprehensive list of all known 20th century lidos and open air pools. It is a book that all swimmers will want to dip into time and time again.
