Finnish ice Swimming Championships

The Finnish Ice Swimming Championships were held in
Oulu, Finland in February. Situated some 200kms south
of the Artic Circle, the city is situated on the Sea of
Bothnia.
A 25m long pool was cut out of the ice and a
grandstand was placed alongside. In total there were a
staggering 1200 swimmers competing in both solo and
relay events over the weekend. The grandstand took
up the large number of spectators who came in sub
zero temperatures to cheer the competitors on.
SwimTrek's Simon Murie attended the event along with
a number of other former SwimTrek swimmers. Simon
said " The Finns take their ice swimming very seriously.
You can see that by the fact that like for the Olympics,
cities have to actually bid to hold the championships."
Next Year Oulu is hosting the World Championships from
3rd-5th March. Swimmers from around the world are
already booked to attend. If this sounds like something
that you might fancy, then just contact the SwimTrek
office and we will get details out to you when they
become available.

| SwimTrek's first Southern Hemisphere Trip.
| | | Australia's Whitsunday Islands played host to
SwimTrek's first Southern Hemisphere tour this
February. Situated off the coast of Queensland the
Whitsundays, with their beautiful islands and waters,
provide the perfect setting for open-water swimming
tours. The group swam approximately 25km over the course of
the week. A mixture of island hopping swims and bay
swims were all part of the trips highlights. However, the
undisputed high point was the 5km swim along the
world famous Whitehaven beach whose dramatic white
sands created an amazing back drop for the swim. The
trip was featured in The Melbourne Age which can be
viewed below. The Melbourne Age article on Whitsunday's Trip....

| New SwimTrek Trip: German Bavarian Lakes
| | | This year SwimTrek are adding a new destination for
swimming trips. The Bavarian lakes are closeted within
the hills and mountains in the southern region of the
Alps. Combined with interesting walking between the
lakes, this tour is a great way to explore the Bavarian
Alps by swimming in some of the cleanest water in
mainland Europe. We swim across four of Bavaria's main lakes. In the
west, we cross the open expanses of Ammersee and
Starnberger Lakes and then make our way to Chiemsee,
where we can even swim between islands containing
palaces, monasteries and nature reserves, making it
one of the most varied days on any our trips. After this
it's then down to the heart of the German Alps and a
swim along the awe inspiring length of the crystal-clear
alpine lake of Königsee where alpine summits lead the
way as we swim. Click here for 2005 depature dates & prices....

swimming in open water or in the pool this is a no-
nonsense guide, based on scientific research, helping
you to prepare in the best possible way for your swims.
