Bathed in
perpetual summer light with close to two hundred thousand lakes, the
clean silky waters of Finland are ideal for swimming at all times
throughout the day and night. Based in lakeside cabins right on
stunning Lake Sakara this trip is a once in a lifetime opportunity to
experience lake hopping in the 24 hour sunlight of the Finnish summer.
Finnish lakes are shallow!
This allows them to be surprisingly warm ( up to 23°C!). We explore the
myriad of remote lakes west of the old town of Loppi. On the final few days of the trip we make our way to
the town of Hämeenlinna, birthplace of the
composer Sibalieus where we will swim in a local lake and
take part in a river swim race finishing at the town’s
historic castle.
The plan is to combine as much walking with the swims so that we reduce
our dependency on motorised transport wherever possible. With canoe
escorts on the swims and walks on paths and tracks, the tour will open
the eye to Finland’s natural beauty.
We will also share in the history of Finland by visiting Field Marshal
Mannerheim’s lakeside cabin which will be the venue for our
midnight swim.
