Open Water Swimming now an Olympic Event
Open Water Swimming will make its debut in 2008 at the Beijing Olympics after the IOC agreed to include 10km events for men and women.

While it is still unsure if the event will be retained for London in 2012, Eton rowing lake has been nominated as the open water swimming venue in 6 years time.

Open Water swimming was only officially recognised by FINA, the world governing body of swimming, in 1986, but you can go back to the 1896 Olympic Games and before to realise that Open Water swimming was the forerunner of the indoor competitive swimming that we know today.

  • Coaching Corner - Sighting
  •   In open water there are no lines on the bottom that you can navigate with. To navigate well you need to constantly check the direction you're swimming in and your eventual target.

Maintaining stroke continuity whilst sighting is essential for maximising your navigation and minimising energy expenditure. In the following article we look at ways of effective sighting.

    Notes on Sighting....

  • MP3 player for swimmers
  •   The recently launched Finis SwiMP3 uses bone conduction to produce sound which is passed into your inner ear. This overcomes the disadvantages of the current range of waterproof MP3 players which rely on the traditional earphone technology and are prone to water noise distortion.

The SwiMP3 has a 128Mb capacity and could turn a long training period into a more stimulating session. Current prices are approximately £130 ($225).
