Alcatraz! The
very name conjures up visions of sharks, frigid waters, Al Capone and
the barren, fog-enshrouded "rock". It closed as a federal prison in
1963 and is now a desolate outpost just 1½ miles off San
Francisco’s Presidio Park.
We are pleased to be able
to offer this one-off swim to anybody who has ever wanted to make this
iconic swim. You will be escorted across this crossing by Mr Alcatraz
himself, Gary Emich who has over 450 crossings to his name already!
You are able to swim
throughout the year with the water temperatures reaching a maximum of
around 16ºC (61ºF) in the summer months.
It
is one of the most exhilarating swims that you could envisage and
during the swim the views are stupendous. As ou leave the island
of
Alcatraz, you see to your left the dramatic Oakland Hills. To
your right is the spectacular Golden Gate Bridge and right in front of
you is the majestic skyline of San Francisco.
If
possible, 2 months notice is required to book your place as the
relevant permits are required to be lodged with the
coastguard.
A
truly iconic swim. Prior to the trip, all swimmers will also receive a
copy of Gary's book "A swim criminal looks at 100: A swimmer's Guide to
a Successful Escape."
