| Hydrotherapy - Georgina Bowden
|
| |
At
SwimTrek's end of season party last year, we raised money for the
hydrotherapy pool at the Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability in Putney,
where SwimTrek guide John Coningham-Rolls works as an Aquability
assistant.
Georgina
Bowden another SwimTrek guide, when not guiding on SwimTrek trips works
as a physiotherapist and has a particular interest in hydrotherapy. The
linked article gives a brief overview of the history and development of
hydrotherapy, its basic principles and some of the techniques used.

| Open Water Swimming Tip of the Month
|
| |
As
you will know that when swimming in open water you don't have a black
line for you to follow. We have asked Josh Santacaterina, an elite
Australian Open Water swimmer for his tips on sighting techniques that
he uses whilst racing.
I've
been swimming open water for roughly 10 years and I wouldn't say that I
know everything there is to know about it. I am forever learning new
techniques and tricks during my races. One aspect that I find is very
important in open water swimming is the ability to swim straight. The
main reasons for this is because the quickest route from one point to
the next is a straight line, so you don't want to be swimming more than
you have to. Another reason is that if you're not swimming straight,
you have more chance of colliding with other swimmers, which can be
frustrating.

| English Channel Record Beaten
|
| |
Bulgaria's
Petar Stoychev broke the 7 hours mark in setting a new world record for
his successful English Channel solo crossing on 24th August.
Captain
Mathew Webb started his successful swim of the English Channel on
exactly the same day but 132 years ago in 1875. Captain Webb took 21
hours 45 mins to reach French soil. One wonders what he would have
thought of Petar's time?
