   Greetings

We always appreciate your comments, so if you would like to see anything covered in the newsletter, then please let us know.

  • Open water swimming & the law
  •   As we have become more respectful of the environment around us, waterways which previously may not have attracted us to swim in have become cleaner, leading to the increase in the number of people wanting to swim in them. Yet the compensation culture and health and safety fears threaten this.

In this excellent article, reprinted from 220 Triathlon Magazine, these issues are explored in depth and suggestions given for a way forward pass this impasse.

  • Long Distance Swimming Training
  •   Are you training for a long distance swim for next year? Then why not come on one of our early season Long Distance Swimming Training Trips running in Gozo during April next year.

Focusing on improving your open water technique and giving you long swims in temperatures similar to the summer in Northern Europe this is ideal preparation for the open water season of 2007 including English Channel solo attempts and other long distance swims.

More info on the Training trip...

  • Medical Corner - Swimmer's Ear
  •   Continuing with this popular series of common medical issues affecting swimmers we look at ear infections which can be an irritant for many of us.

In the linked article, we explore the number of causes that lead to ear problems and what can be done to prevent them.

    Notes on Swimmers Ear...

  • Sally versus the Channel, Round Two!!
  •   In our October 2005 Newsletter we carried Sally Goble's first hand account of her ultimately unsuccessful attempt at the English Channel.

Not to be defeated, Sally attempted it again this year and made it across in 18 hours 52 minutes. You can read Sally's account of her crossing. Well Done Sally!!!

  • Death of the author of "Waterlog"
  •   Recently, Roger Deakin the British author who popularised the joys of open water swimming in and around the British Isles passed away.

IN THE summer of 1996, while swimming in the moat of his 16th-century farmhouse during a downpour, Roger Deakin had an idea: "The notion of a long swim through Britain began to form itself. I wanted to follow the rain on its meanderings about our land to rejoin the sea, to break out of the frustration of a lifetime doing lengths, of endlessly turning back on myself like a tiger pacing its cage." What resulted was Waterlog, a 300-page record of his journey between 1997 and 1999 from his home to the Hebrides via streams, fens, pools, lidos, estuaries and canals, sometimes with friends but often on his own.
