Swimmer swims the Amazon

At 3,272 miles, its length alone would be enough to challenge even the
most ardent SwimTrekker. Throw into the mix, schools of flesh eating
piranhas, bloodsucking toothpick fish, giant anacondas and aggressive
bull sharks and you have one heck of a journey!
But
Martin Strel is not called "The Fish Man" for nothing. He has just
conquered one of nature's most spectacular and inhospitable waterways -
the Amazon river.
This
is Martin Strel's fourth river swim. In 2000 he covered Europe's
1,866-mile Danube. He broke that record two years later by swimming
2,360 miles down the Mississippi in the US. And in 2004 he set his
third world record after swimming 2,487 miles along China's Yangtze.
In
2001 he broke the world record for an uninterrupted swim, covering 313
miles in a time of 84 hours 10 minutes.

| Swimming in the Finnish Lakes
|
| |
Finland is known for its lakes. There are close to
200,000 of them in the country. We have hand picked a collection of
them to launch our first ever SwimTrek trip there in late June.
Situated near the cities of Helsinki and Tampere this tour is ideally
located to both of their international airports.
Due
to their shallow depths the lakes are surprisingly
warm (approximately 22°C). Featuring midnight swimming (it's 24
hour light!) and a first ever swim through the picturesque town of
Hämeenlinna, where we will be joined by the town's local
swimmers in commemoration of this inaugural event!

| Swimming and the Art of Recovery
|
| |
We must remember that what we do after a swim
session can be just as important as the swim itself in improving your
exercise capacity.
In
this excellent and informative article by USA Swimming the five key
components for optimal recovery are highlighted and demonstrate the
fact that the real gains in exercise capacity occur when the body and
muscles are at rest.

| Open Water Swimming DVD Available
|
| |
Just released, "Lane Lines to Shore Lines: Your
Complete Guide to Open Water Swimming" is an excellent offering, useful
for both the open water novice as well as the more experienced swimmer.
Co-written
by SwimTrek's very own Gary Emich, it covers such topics as safety,
swim technique, acclimatisation, training, suitable equipment and a
bonus feature of swimming from Alcatraz. Gary says that "It's the most
comprehensive open water swimming DVD out there" and after viewing it
we couldn't disagree.

| Kelli is leaving SwimTrek!
|
| |
After nearly 4 years with SwimTrek, our office
manager Kelli Rabbitt is moving back to Australia at the end of May.
Kelli has become a vital link and source of information for our guides
and many SwimTrekkers and I know that she will be missed by those of us
from SwimTrek as well as some of those who have had dealings with her.
We wish her well!
Taking
over from Kelli in the office is fellow Aussie Brad Andersen, a keen
swimmer, who says he is looking forward to talking and meeting with as
many of you as possible.

| Swim for charity
|
| |
Top and tail the summer with a swim for charity:
SwimTrek is supporting Breastrokes with USA PRO again in 2007, with two
swims to raise money for breast cancer research at Cancer Research UK.
On
28th July 500 swimmers will do a 1km dawn swim along the length of the
Serpentine in Hyde Park, London, with brunch on the banks afterwards.
On 1st September 300 swimmers will do a 1.5km or 3km course in
Windermere, with a bonfire, BBQ, beer and camping on site for those
who'd like to stay. Children 12 and up can swim in both events with a
responsible adults.
